English Language Arts Teacher Position

The Leelanau School is seeking a HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER (Fall 2018) who can work collaboratively in our independent environment while adhering to the high expectations of the program. Candidates must be creative lesson designers, enthusiastic about developing young writers, responsive to the needs of individual learners, and maintain a caring atmosphere by building positive relationships with students and families.

Job Description:

  • The Leelanau School is a 9th-12th grade fully independent co-ed boarding and day school.
  • The Leelanau School was founded in 1929 on the principles of small class sizes, broad and enriching curriculum, and experiential learning.
  • High School students experience Language Arts through exploration of literature, creative writing, poetry, speaking, listening, and integration with the arts and humanities.
  • All students are supported by a Learning Commons programs, integrating course work and developing effective executive functioning skills for the lifelong benefit of the students.
  • Frequent use of our Lake Michigan shoreline, wooded campus, and involvement in nature is a core component of teaching and learning.
  • In addition to planning and delivering daily instruction and assessment, Leelanau teachers are expected to engage with students for the benefit of their positive social-emotional development and extracurricular involvement.
  • All school faculty members are invested in the stewardship of The Leelanau School, and are expected to participate in decision-making related to curriculum, policies, and activities of the greater school and its mission.

Requirements:

  • Respect for learners and a passion for their social, emotional, and intellectual development.
  • Prior classroom experience in direct instruction of secondary students (designing curriculum, planning lessons, preparing materials, differentiating instruction, assessment).
  • Demonstrated instructional agility to develop student’s interests and skills in social development, critical thinking, creativity, literacy development, and the humanities.
  • Commitment to emergent curriculum, experiential methods, and integration of the outdoors.
  • Practiced in a variety of instructional strategies to develop passionate readers, creative writers, and critical thinkers.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with teams to develop curriculum, deliver instruction, support individual students, and advance programming.
  • Excellence in communication (verbal and written; formal and informal).
  • Respect for parenting and inherent partnership of school and home.
  • Experience in communicating with parents.  Expertise in adolescent development that can be effectively applied in student and parent communication.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Education.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Successful clearance of FBI background checks and iCHAT (State Police).
