Let’s Talk About Pop Culture

Popular culture is defined as “contemporary lifestyle and items that are well known and generally accepted” and “cultural patterns that are widespread within a population.” Sounds boring, right?
Wrong! In this course, we will explore and experience the dance, music, literature, art, movies, and fashion of the last 50 years of the 20th century in America, leading right up to the new millennium when you all were born. Issues like celebrity, kitsch, fads, and icons will also be explored as well as the practices and beliefs of each time period. At the same time, we will discover how the historical events contributed to and were influenced themselves by popular culture. We will learn about the people who developed pop culture as well as the consumers who devoured it. Expect to dress up, get down, and get psyched! It will be totally gnarly!
