Math Support will provide the opportunity to redo or reinforce skills in any of our math courses offered during the academic semesters. Students choosing to enroll in Math Support will co-create an individualized plan including goals to be accomplished during Winter Term. Students in the Calculus class who would like to take the AP exams at the end of the school year are also welcome to enroll in this class.

We’ve all heard of Pearl Harbor, Normandy, and Adolf Hitler. But have you ever wanted to take a more in-depth look at the event that changed not only the course of world history forever but the lives of normal people? This class will explore how World War II affected everyday people through films like Ken Burns’ The War, shows like The Band of Brothers, novels set during World War II, and diaries and interviews with people who lived through it. Of course, we will study historical events, but we will always look at them through a more personal lens.

1/2 Credit in either History or English
Instructors: Elizabeth Blondia and Bruce Hood

This is the class for musicians, poets, and those who always dreamed of writing songs. We will begin by learning the basic skills on the guitar, bass, piano, mandolin, fiddle, drums, etc. We will also be working with our voices and the practice of writing lyrics. Next, we will take all of these skills, work together in small groups, and put them into the wonderful art of songwriting. Prior experience on an instrument would be wonderful, but not required. I am looking for those with a creative spirit, willingness to try new things, those open to playing any style of music and an interest in working with others. We will end our term with an opportunity to share our songs with the Leelanau community in our Celebration of Winter Term.

This class will be a survey of storytelling through a variety of media and techniques. The class will also investigate the history of visual storytelling and explore structures and methods for organizing and framing stories. Topics will include but are not limited to: page layout and narrative, graphic novels, cartooning, sequential art, video editing, time-lapse video, animation, and scrapbooking. Students will have the opportunity to craft individual projects to suit their interests and inspirations while exploring a variety of approaches to storytelling.

Do you love food? Do you love working with and learning about food? Do you love EATING food? Then this is the class for you. Food is Love will not only teach you some basics of cooking, but it will also help you to appreciate what it takes to create healthy and tasty dishes. We will work quite a bit with our very own chefs in the Leelanau kitchen, researching and creating menus, baking delicious desserts, and learning the culinary basics. In addition, we will go on field trips to local favorites like Oryana, The Cheese Lady, Stonehouse Bakery, Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates, and Fustini Oil and Vinegar. Watching The Chef’s Table and reading a variety of food blogs and articles will round out this exciting course. Food is Love will open your eyes and your taste buds to the wonderful world of food.
